No Money: A Teen Christmas Saga

From TeensGotCents

As of this very moment there are exactly 22 days till Christmas. Are you like me? Have you done any shopping? Of course not. Did you start saving back in January like you promised yourself you would? Of course NOT. Did you start thinking about Christmas this morning? Yep. Do you have any money? Nope.

All seems in order for a typical Christmas season for me. How about you?

Sigh. I do this to myself year after year and it’s so frustrating that I don’t do a better job. So here I am again just a few weeks before Christmas with very little money, not much time, and some people I love and really care about and want to get a gift for this year.

DIY to the rescue! Don’t worry, I have a few ideas for you on things you can make to remind people they are special to you – may take a little time but very little money!

The first thing to do is to download different store apps that will give you coupons for the supplies you will need. Joann’s, Michaels, AC Moore and most other craft type stores have their own app. You can usually get a coupon for between 30% and 50% on a single item. Sometimes they will have a special percent off the entire purchase.

Here are a few of the projects I have tried that were fairly simple and didn’t need a lot of supplies or ingredients. Many of them are less than $5 if you use your coupons carefully!

Papier-mâché Bowls

I made some of these this summer as a gift for my best friend. They are great for holding jewelry or change. We happened to have a pack of balloons at the house, newspaper, and the glue. I just had to buy two colors of paint. The best part is that I still have a lot of paint left and can make many more of these whenever I want and it won’t cost a cent!

Painted Tie

To be honest, this was one of the few truly easy projects I could find for guys. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of DIY projects to make for your favorite guy, but I don’t have a blowtorch or any of the other ‘tools’ needed for a lot of them. I did find this cool tie project though, and the only tools needed was some tape and paint. You could do all sorts of designs but I decided to keep it simple on my first try!

All you need to do is tape off the tie, paint one coat of white acrylic paint and then another coat or two of fabric paint. I used silver for the black tie I chose.

Makeup Remover Pads

This is a simple and easy project that just used coconut oil, baby shampoo, water, and tea tree oil if you want to use it. I used to buy those expensive makeup remover wipes but not anymore! These do a great job of taking off makeup and don’t burn my eyes like the store bought ones do.

You can purchase the cotton pads at the dollar store as well as a little mason jar container. Decorate the jar with paint or a ribbon and you have a great gift!

Of course there are TONS of other projects you can find to do with a simple google search or by browsing Pinterest.  Good luck!
